AI has rapidly evolved from science fiction to a necessary tool for success in the middle market. When leveraged effectively, AI solutions can improve key processes across all organizations, from streamlining transactional back-office processes and detecting fraud to conducting more focused demand planning and delivering a better customer and user experience.

As with any new technology, AI works best when you start with a problem you want solved and then apply AI solutions to it. Attempting to apply any technology without a plan in place often does not meet expectations, but mapping out critical business needs and then strategically deploying AI solutions can yield truly transformational results. Simply put, you can save money, save time and make more informed business decisions with AI, but proper planning and integration are critical for success.

With RSM, you can capitalize on the vast potential of AI solutions

RSM’s AI consulting services and solutions can efficiently identify your most important pain points and where AI can have the most impact. Our experienced advisors can leverage the power of innovation to create and implement a proactive AI strategy that can turn your business challenges into a competitive advantage and successfully manage potential AI risks.

The use of AI is quickly growing in the middle market, as companies discover the potential of the technology and see the results first-hand.

In a recent RSM middle market AI survey:

78% of respondents said their organizations currently use AI and 77% use generative AI. For companies that said they don’t currently use AI, nearly half (46%) have a plan to use AI in the next 12 months.

The time to act on AI is now. RSM’s AI consulting services and solutions team enables you to understand the technology, find the most beneficial use cases within your organization and utilize AI as a catalyst for change.

What is AI consulting?

Despite its surging popularity in the middle market, AI is not simply a plug-and-play solution. An effective solution requires nuance, judgment and experience that many organizations do not possess in-house. Advice and guidance from an experienced AI consulting firm can create and deploy a strategy that successfully capitalizes on AI technology.

How can a consultant help my business better utilize AI technology?

An AI approach must be tuned effectively to be truly effective. A trusted AI consulting firm like RSM can shape your strategy and direct how and where AI solutions are deployed to increase the potential for significant results.

How can AI consulting help me identify and prioritize AI opportunities?

An experienced AI consulting firm has exposure to a broad range of solutions and use cases that can be successfully applied to your organization. AI is a journey, not a one-time solution—especially as technology and potential applications continue to evolve. A consultant can target opportunities that will have the biggest impact on your business now, while outlining strategies for ongoing enhancements moving forward.

How can AI improve efficiency and productivity in my organization?

Across all industries, AI has the potential to deliver seismic improvements to insight and efficiency.

For example, if you are a builder who cannot quickly get projects started because progress is stifled by manual forms and permit applications, AI solutions can automatically populate much or all the necessary data, saving significant time and money and directly contributing to new business.

If you are a manufacturer, AI applications can give you visibility into when a piece of machinery needs maintenance or may need replacement. For manufacturers, AI’s potential to enhance predictive maintenance, optimize supply chains and improve quality control is only the start. Increased productivity, enhanced decision making and cost savings will drive broader adoption of the technology.

Within health care, AI solutions and generative AI governance can help drastically improve patient care. AI can utilize patient data to rapidly diagnose conditions or develop effective care plans. Doctors can also hone their skills on AI-generated procedure simulators to save them time and improve the patient experience.

The potential uses for AI are almost limitless. Human intervention is almost always necessary as a safeguard to ensure accuracy, but the productivity and efficiency gains are extremely valuable, especially as staffing challenges are projected to persist moving forward.

What are the challenges or risks associated with AI adoption and how can they be mitigated?

Many of the risks related to AI adoption are related to data security and privacy. In fact, in RSM’s middle market AI survey, among companies that don’t plan on using generative AI in the next 12 months, 46% say they have concerns over data privacy and security.

However, many of those risks only emerge if companies upload data to a public large language model or send data within a prompt.

Companies need to have an effective control environment to secure sensitive information to ensure it is not shared with those who should not have access. This is not a new concept, but a new application of a common risk mitigation strategy.

The survey found that 54% of respondents agree that generative AI was harder to implement than expected, emphasizing the importance of working with a trusted AI consulting firm.

Many companies do not have internal resources with exposure to rapidly evolving AI solutions and emerging use cases. An experienced third party like RSM can connect business goals to AI technology.

What are the cybersecurity risks related to AI?

Much like AI has enabled businesses to complete tasks faster and increase organizational efficiency, it has done the same for cybercriminals. AI has reduced the time necessary for hackers to launch attacks, amplifying the magnitude of current cybersecurity threats.

Many companies are concerned that increased usage of AI will expose sensitive information, but effective controls over that data should limit those risks. It is not a new concept, but a new application for many companies.

In addition, if a company wants to build a fully enabled large language model that requires expert-level information and feedback, it will likely be derived from a similar model someone else has built. Whether the model is hosted by a provider or built internally, it is subject to access risks.

However, practices and techniques to safely build and maintain models are available. Companies must consider where the model lives, what information the model can have access to, and whether anything happened in the development or the operation of that model that could inject additional risk. If the company does not control and own the model, then a provider could increase the level of risk.

But in these scenarios, the risks are manageable and largely related to internal controls and education.

How do I get started with AI?

Successful AI implementation and integration is a complex process, and companies can start at varying maturity levels. Some companies need baseline AI education to understand the technology, while others have that internal knowledge and can begin by developing design elements and strategies. Others may have the in-house personnel to determine their AI approach but need assistance with execution and deployment.

No matter where you are on your journey, RSM AI consulting solutions can guide your business to focus on what’s practical to begin your AI journey. For many companies, an AI readiness assessment is an effective first step to determine how AI can be used within. From an education perspective, our team can deliver a wide range of services from a ChatGPT starter kit to on-demand AI training. For more mature companies with a strategy in place, we offer comprehensive project and program management, testing and training, and policy and governance along with other services in preparation for implementation.
