Cyberattacks: Best practices in the aftermath of a breach

While cyberattacks and breaches are global issues, leaders of Canadian organizations need to be well aware as to the risks of these types of attacks. As of Nov. 1, 2018, new provisions in Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) came into effect, which mandate the tracking and notification of data breaches by Canadian organizations. "The number and frequency of significant data breaches over the past few years have proven there's a clear need for mandatory reporting," said the Canadian Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien.
Many Canadian organizations are not well prepared for a cyber-breach, and may not realize the risks involved; risks to their reputation, risks to their data, and risks to their customers. Having an understanding as to the various threat vectors, the steps required to respond to a cyber-breach and having someone available to assist in a time of need are the best initial first steps to being prepared.
