RSM careers

Meet Allison Merriam, tax manager at RSM and former Miss Wheelchair Kansas, who supports her local community and uplifts lives through advocacy and service.

In her own words:

Restarting my journey

I was in a car accident in 2012 and was paralyzed from the chest down; I have been using a wheelchair ever since. I was honoured to be crowned in 2018 as Miss Wheelchair Kansas. During my reign, I travelled across the state, advocating to transform the perception of disability. I participated in events throughout Kansas, engaging with communities and raising awareness for those with disabilities.

Additionally, I volunteer with the Department of Children and Families, supporting individuals rebuilding their lives after injury, helping them rediscover strength and purpose.  I do this by mentoring children with disabilities, assisting with career exploration, helping individuals seek accommodations and building overall confidence.

Fueling change through the RSM US Foundation

I also assist a variety of nonprofit organizations with a focus on making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities. One of the most impactful moments in this journey was receiving a $5,000 Community Impact Fund grant from the RSM US Foundation to support Junior Miss Wheelchair Kansas, where I now volunteer as a board member. I’ve also leveraged the RSM US Foundation’s Dollars for Doers program to further support this organization, logging volunteer hours as treasurer.

Chasing dreams: RSM’s Pursue Your Passion program

Being a winner of the firm’s Pursue Your Passion program gave me the opportunity to receive a specialized rugby wheelchair. With that support, I helped form a U.S. women’s wheelchair rugby team and competed in international events, including the 2023 and 2024 Women’s Cup in Paris.

Inclusion in action

I’ve been actively involved in RSM’s Abilities employee network group, supporting initiatives that empower individuals with disabilities, including communicating needs in my local office. When our office relocated in 2021, accessibility was thoughtfully built into the design from the start, which reflects RSM’s commitment to inclusion not just as a value but demonstrated through thoughtful action.

My message of possibility

I want people, especially students with disabilities, to see that a fulfilling career is possible. Yes, there are challenges, but there are supportive workplaces out there and RSM is one of them.
