Since retiring in 2023, Jeff has been focused on what he calls the “Five Fs” of retirement: faith, family, friends, fitness and fun. His weeks are a mix of having quality time with grandkids, exercising, connecting with friends, traveling and, most recently, surviving a six-month townhouse remodel while living in the basement.
One of the best parts of retirement? “My wife hasn’t kicked me out of the house yet,” says Jeff. Jane adds that she might if he were ever actually home. These days, his activities range from hiking, cycling (of course) and kayaking to occasional water skiing—at least until a pulled hamstring reminded him he wasn’t 20 anymore. Maybe golf would be better…
Today, Jeff also serves on company boards and as a co-trustee for a local business, keeping his professional skills sharp while enjoying the flexibility of post-public accounting life. Jeff also continues to stay connected to RSM by attending partner meetings and retirement celebrations, and staying in touch with colleagues. “I do my best to stay in touch without being a pest or a stranger,” he says.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Jeff serves as a part-time volunteer pastor at the church he and Jane helped plant 20 years ago. His focus includes developing discipleship programs, welcoming newcomers and supporting ministry leaders. “The things I learned at RSM have been helpful in this new role,” Jeff shares.
Jeff’s reflections on retirement come with a message that resonates for those still working at the firm: wellbeing isn’t just for later, it’s essential now. “Deferred maintenance is real,” he says. “Take care of yourself while you’re still working … and eat your fruits and vegetables.”
