Building a career and community through volunteering

RSM careers

Hi, I’m Krista Gigliotti. I’ve been with RSM for 10 years, starting as an intern and joining full-time after graduating from college. I work in the tax technology group, focusing on improving the user experience for the tax products we support.

In her own words:

How my passion for volunteering began

During my internship with RSM, I saw how involved the firm was in the local communities where we work, which resonated with me, as I have always had an interest in volunteering and stewardship. Seeing that commitment in action inspired me to explore new ways to give back and connect with others.

Stewardship in action with the RSM US Foundation

I’ve been involved with the RSM US Foundation’s Power of Love program, serving as an office champion and dedicating time to our annual stewardship campaign. Through this campaign, we select a local youth-focused charity to support through fundraising and volunteering.

Last year, my local office, in partnership with United Way of Greater Richmond, built and painted two Little Free Libraries where people can drop off or pick up books. The RSM US Foundation supported the project not only through volunteer hours but also by providing a grant to cover the project costs. It was a great team effort and a clear example of how we’re encouraged to give back.

I also tracked my volunteer hours through the Dollars for Doers program while spending time with my daughter’s elementary school’s parent-teacher organization. The Foundation provided a matching grant to support those hours, which will help the school purchase supplies to support my own child’s educational experience.

Personal and professional growth through volunteering

Volunteering has encouraged me to think beyond my day-to-day work and consider how I can add value to my local community. It’s also helped me expand my internal network and build relationships across the firm. I’ve met colleagues I wouldn’t normally work with and learned more about how they serve our clients and make an impact.

As a mom of three, I bring my children along to volunteer at kid-friendly events. It’s a great way to teach them the power of giving back. Recently, my children had a blast when they joined me in volunteering with our local Girls on the Run 5K. I appreciate the flexibility and support from RSM, which helps me feel supported in balancing my professional responsibilities with my passion for volunteering and family life.

My piece of advice for those considering volunteering

There’s always a need, and there’s always something valuable you can contribute. The key is to find something you’re passionate about. That’s when it becomes more than just a one-time effort, as you build relationships and you grow with the cause.
