Abilities employee network group

Supporting and raising awareness for those with disabilities

Our Abilities employee network group (ENG) strives to foster an environment that supports professionals who are differently abled, and/or those who have children or other dependents with special needs, as they build their careers at RSM. The Abilities ENG educates RSM and the broader community on the challenges and gifts of the differently abled by engaging with local groups in the community and communicating needs in the office environment to ensure full inclusion in the RSM workforce.

Abilities focuses on three areas:

  • Sensory: Individuals who are challenged with hearing, sight or other sensory needs

  • Mobility and environmental: Individuals who require an assisted device such as crutches or a wheelchair for mobility, and individuals with conditions such as diabetes or lupus, whose special diets or medications might affect their ability to reach their full potential in an office environment

  • Cognitive: Individuals with autism, Down's syndrome, traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder

Creating a more accessible and equitable world for all

December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) – a day set aside to recognize visible and invisible disabilities, bring awareness to the challenges faced by those with disabilities and shed a light on the importance of equal rights and opportunities for everyone. This year is particularly momentous for those in the disabled community, as it’s the 29th year of celebrating IDPD and marks nearly three decades of progressive, meaningful change.

So, how are we breaking down barriers and creating meaningful change for our colleagues with disabilities here at the firm? A few examples include:

  • Advocating for those with disabilities year-round by investing in our Abilities employee network group (ENG), which is focused on supporting professionals who are differently abled and/or those who have children or dependents with special needs, as they build their careers at RSM.
  • Creating designated committees to help further education, awareness and programs at the firm, including a mental health task force, MS Advisory Committee, Autism Awareness and Advisory Committee and cognitive, sensory and mobility committees.
  • Offering educational, interactive events which tackle everyday challenges for everyone at the firm, both in-person and virtual. Our events include topics that impact our professionals, such as ADHD and anxiety. Our most recent event, a neurodiversity in the workplace webcast, focused on reducing the stigma associated with learning differences.
  • A little more than a year ago, joining more than 80 CEOs in signing Disability IN’s CEO Letter on Disability Inclusion.

Here at RSM, we believe in the Power of Being You and that our differences make us stronger – and, we commit to embracing these differences not only on IDPD, but year-round. On behalf of the Abilities ENG and the nearly 14,700 people at RSM, I invite you to join us in celebrating the unique contributions those who are differently abled.
