After her time as RSM Canada’s national marketing director, Deanna Vexler returned to financial services as head of brand at a leading digital bank.

I always knew I wanted to work within the marketing realm. I completed my Bachelor of Business Administration at the Schulich School of Business, York University, and then went on to get my MBA at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto in 2016— both with marketing concentrations—and spent several years in marketing at a Big Five bank.

I joined RSM Canada in 2020 as national marketing director, responsible for leading the Canadian marketing strategy and supporting growth within the region. During that time, the firm experienced tremendous growth and change, which was exciting. I had a pivotal role integrating the Canadian and U.S. marketing teams.

In 2023, I left RSM and returned to the financial services industry, where I am currently head of brand at a leading digital bank in Canada. In this role, I focus on driving brand strategy, visual identity, enterprise marketing, social media and sponsorships—including a sponsorship with the Raptors, which is a lot of fun!

Reflecting on my time at RSM, I’m most proud of the personal connections, particularly among our communications, marketing and growth function, to integrate our Canada and U.S. strategy to serve clients seamlessly across borders as RSM.

A lasting lesson from my RSM experience is to keep trying new things in your career. Always seek opportunities to learn and find what energizes you! You learn just as much from what you don’t like as you do from the things you enjoy. Understanding the different functions and areas of the business, even those outside your immediate passion, will help you grow.

My biggest takeaway from RSM is the firm’s human-first leadership, a mindset that prioritizes people. I started my job at RSM during the pandemic, and this leadership style was especially true and necessary during those unprecedented times. RSM’s approach had a lasting impact on me; actions speak. I recognized it, I appreciated it and I have incorporated this into how I lead in my current role. How you show up as a leader, especially in the moments that matter, is key for your people. I am still very much connected with previous colleagues and appreciate the relationships I have built.

Outside of work, I love to travel! I spent over two weeks in India this past December; I loved it so much, I plan to return this December to see more of the country.
