In that role I was responsible for integrating the firm's technology systems and platforms. I also evaluated and implemented new technologies to enhance the firm's services and operations. I enjoyed mentoring and developing the IT team and maturing the technology landscape to bring stability and security to the firm's IT function, as well as optimizing the costs and investing in innovation.
In 2019, I decided to take on a new challenge and joined a global insurance company, as its Canadian CIO. The company was undergoing a significant transformation at the time, as it doubled in size and expanded its market share. I led the adoption of cutting-edge solutions that enhanced productivity and optimized the use of data and the cloud to position the organization for long-term success in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
Reflecting on my career at RSM and its predecessor firm, I’m most proud of bringing stability and scale to the technology landscape and increasing security for the firm. I loved having the opportunity to mentor and build teams. We developed talent within IT and built a high-performing, results-oriented team. We optimized IT costs and used those savings to invest in new technology. I also loved how our leaders trusted us, giving us the autonomy to push forward and make the right changes when needed.
My experience at RSM taught me a few things that have stayed with me. The structure of professional services is different than working for a public traded company or in other distinct sectors or industries. Our partners cared about the development and performance of our firm; that gave me an entrepreneurial attitude, and it showed me how to be adaptable. Our culture also balanced hard work with fun. I have maintained this mindset and still live by it at my current company.
RSM’s range of services allowed me to learn more about multiple business areas. Working together is essential! Our firm always encouraged cooperation across the enterprise. Lastly, the people were wonderful. I’ve participated in some alumni events, and I’ve liked reconnecting with other alum, as well as with RSM partners and employees.
